Indiana artist and architect Doug Abrams joined the Art Association of Henry County (AAHC) after renewing his interest in watercolor painting several years ago. He received a degree in Architecture and Environmental Design from Ball State University and enjoys practicing architecture as an art form along with watercolor and oil painting. He has won numerous awards in architecture, drawing and painting.
Doug has always had an interest in the visual arts and was introduced to watercolor painting in high school. He is drawn to watercolor for its spontaneity, luminosity and play of transparency, translucency and opacity. He has gained inspiration from water media artist such as Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, and Andrew Wyeth. Residing in Knightstown, Doug enjoys painting the local architecture and vernacular structures, as well as the regional countryside. He also enjoys teaching the medium and viewing the works of local artist.
His painting “Bristol Head” won Best of Show at the 2003 AAHC annual member show. It was painted en plein air (out of doors) in the mountains, near Creede , Colorado . Doug enjoys traveling and painting outdoors and is a member of the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association and the American College of Healthcare Architects (ACHA). He has studied with several water media artist, including Stephen Quiller, Tony Van Hasselt, Frank Francese, Paul George and Indiana ’s Bill Borden.
In 2005, Doug visited Monhegan Island – a “painter’s paradise” off the coast of Maine . Many artists through the years have lived and painted the surroundings of this timeless Island . His award winning “The Red House, Monhegan Island ” was painted on location. His work is in private, corporate and commercial collections.
